The Rev. David Boyd
The Rector
The Rev. David Boyd was born in Janesville, WI, April 15, 1955. He graduated from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1977. David was an All-American swimmer and is still active in Masters Swimming. In 1984, he graduated with a Masters in Divinity from Nashotah House Theological Seminary and was ordained deacon and priest in the Diocese of Milwaukee.
David was called as the 13th rector of St. David’s in August 2003. Prior to being called to Austin, David served as Associate Rector at Grace Church in Madison, Wisconsin, as Rector of the Church of St. John the Divine in Burlington, Wisconsin, as Rector and Urban Missioner of two inner-city missions, St. John’s and St. Andrew’s in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and last as Rector of the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, a suburban parish in Lexington, Kentucky.
David has served on Diocesan Standing Committees in the dioceses of Milwaukee and Lexington,has been elected to the Episcopal Church’s General Convention four times and has served on various diocesan and national Church committees.
David’s wife, Catherine Tyndall Boyd, is also a priest of the Episcopal Church serving as chaplain at Trinity Episcopal School in Austin. Cathy previously served the Episcopal Church on local, diocesan and national levels as a professional communicator. David and Cathy have two children, Marc and Clare.
The Rev. Ron Smith
Associate Priest, Pastoral Care & Adult Christian Formation
Ron, a native of Kansas City, has a BA in English and an MA in Religion from the University of Kansas. Having moved to Austin to attend the Seminary of the Southwest, he received an MDiv from the seminary and an MBA and an MA in Philosophy from UT. Ron started serving St. David’s in 1986 and has each summer been the priest in residence at Trinity Church on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Ron says that St. David’s represents the full spectrum of Anglicanism and, as such, is prepared to be open to visitors from many religious traditions: that a circle of tenderness and a spirit of gentleness are the force drawing visitors to our corporate life.
In the spring of 2002 The University of Texas at Austin established the “Ronald Nelson Smith Chair in Christian Origins” in the Classics department, a position currently held by Dr. L. Michael White. This chair was established in response to a gift given to the university to honor Ron’s ministry and commitment to Biblical education.
The Rev. Mary Vano
Associate Priest, Evangelism, Vistors, & New Members
The Rev. Mary Vano graduated with a M.Div. from the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in Austin in May of 2003. In September 2003, she joined the staff at St. David’s. Mary is primarily responsible for New Member Ministries and Evangelism, in addition to serving as part of the liturgical team in worship.
Mary and her husband, Stephen, are originally from Harlingen, Texas. Mary did her undergraduate work at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, where she earned a B.A. in Religion Studies and Sociology.
The Rev. Chad Vaughn
Associate Priest, Outreach & Communications
The Rev. Chad Vaughn received a Master of Divinity from the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in May 2006, and was ordained as priest in June 2006. He and his wife, Amanda, are both natives of Atlanta, Georgia. Chad is an alumnus of Oglethorpe University in Atlanta where he earned a B.A. with a double major in English and Art History. After college, Chad worked for the art museum and development office at his alma mater before eventually going to work at the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta, which is also his home parish. At St. David’s, Chad has oversight of outreach and communication ministries as well as serving as part of the liturgical and pastoral team.
The Rev. Ken Malcolm
Assisting Priest
The Rev. Kenneth Malcolm graduated with a Masters of Divinity from the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in Austin in May of 2007. Ken is primarily responsible for oversight of Youth, Young Adult and Young Family Ministries. In addition to his responsibilities at St. David’s Ken serves as Director of Admissions at the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest.
Ken is married to Beth Pfautz who teaches Spanish at Trinity School. Ken and Beth have two children Douglas and Peter. They moved to Austin from Richmond Virginia where Ken was serving as the Program Director for the Diocese of Virginia. Before Ken joined the diocesan staff he worked as a college history instructor and as an experiential outdoor educator. Ken is originally from Texas and Beth grew up in Virginia. Ken received a B. A. in liberal arts from Austin College (Sherman, Texas) and an M. A. in History, majoring in medieval Europe with minors in architecture and metaphysics from Texas Tech University.
The Rev. Victoria Anne Mason
Deacon, Outreach
Deacon Victoria Mason was born in Seattle, Washington, but lived in many other places. She claims Austin as being the closest to being her home town. She earned her B.A. in History and English from the University of Texas at Austin and her M.S. in Vocational Rehabilitation from the University of Wisconsin – Stout. Victoria completed the Iona School for Ministry of the Diocese of Texas in preparation for ordination as a Deacon in February 2007. “I was drawn to the ordained ministry for all my adult life, but I never felt I should ‘leave the world,’ she explained. “I was first attracted to the nature of being simultaneously in the world and in the church.” She is aware of God’s economy, at first wanting to change fields then finding that her work experiences were recalled in her servant ministry. Deacon Mason works with the Jubilee Ministries and with the Episcopal Community Outreach Ministries in the Diocese of Texas. She is married to Roy Larsen; has three grown children and one adorable grandchild.
The Rev. J. Patrick Hazel
Assisting Priest
Pat is a native Texan. He was ordained in Rome as a Roman Catholic Priest on July 12, 1959. He received an S.T.L. (License in Sacred Theology) in 1960 from the Gregorian University in Rome; a M.Ed. in 1968 from Loyola University in Chicago; and a J.D. from The University of Texas School of Law in 1971. He practiced law and then taught at The University of Texas School of Law for 28 years, retiring in 2003. He was accepted as a priest in the Episcopal Church at St. David’s on July 12, 2001.
