Vestry
The vestry is the “board of directors” of the church, and its officers, the senior warden, junior warden, treasurer, and clerk, correspond to the president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary of secular nonprofit organizations.
The vestry operates under the Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Church, the Constitution and Canons of the Diocese of Texas, and the Bylaws of St. David’s Episcopal Church. The canons state that “the Vestry shall be agents and legal representatives of the Parish in all matters concerning its corporate property and the relations of the Parish to its Clergy.”
There are 15 parishioners on the vestry, each serving staggered three-year terms. Five new members are elected at the annual parish meeting, in January. Vestry candidates must be at least 18 years of age and enrolled confirmed communicants in good standing of the parish. Before taking office, each elected vestry member must agree to the parish’s Vestry Expectations and Covenant, and must sign the following statement:
“I am persuaded that the Holy Scriptures contain all doctrine required as necessary for eternal salvation through faith in Jesus Christ; and I accede to the Doctrine, Discipline, and Worship of the Protestant Episcopal Church.”
