The music in this service is an eclectic combination of contemporary songs and classic hymns. This service, primarily led by our rector, David Boyd, offers worship which appeals to a broad variety of ages and religious experiences and those who may consider themselves spiritual but not “religious”.

Acknowledgments
Lord, make my soul mirror Thee;
Thyself alone, to shine in me,
That men may see Thy love, Thy grace,
Nor note the glass that shows Thy face.
Blanche Mary KellyDeepest thanks to all members of St. David’s Altar Guild, past and present, who serve their Lord faithfully day after day, week after week, year after year, and to all those who contributed to this version of the Altar Guild Manual by submitting instructions, by proofreading, by offering suggestions, and by making corrections. Special thanks to our rector, the Rev. David Boyd, who teaches us, guides us, and supports us in our service.
Excerpt from the Altar Guild Manual:
The National Altar Guild Association Prayer
Most gracious Father, Who has called me, Your child, to serve in the preparation of
Your Altar, so that it may be a suitable place for the offering of Your Body and Blood;
Sanctify my life and consecrate my hands so that I may worthily handle those Sacred
Gifts which are being offered to You.
As I handle holy things, grant that my whole life may be illuminated and blessed by
You, in whose honor I prepare them, and grant the people who shall be blessed by
their use, may find their lives drawn closer to Him Whose Body and Blood is our
hope and our strength, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Rt. Rev. E. Don Taylor
Vicar Bishop of New York City
All Saints’ Day, 2002
Imagine that you are preparing for a very special party - - a feast. You set the table with the very best you have to offer, and because different meals are celebrated with greater or lesser formality you choose fine linen or “easy care,” candles or oil lights, silver or pottery vessels to express your individuality. Hold this image in your mind as you approach your Altar Guild service.
But before you start these physical preparations, prepare your heart and attitude with prayer: not only for your Sunday service, but every day. Make the Altar Guild part of your daily prayer life: include your team members, your team captain, the Altar Guild co-chairs, your clergy, and your church, even as you pray for your own participation. Allow the Altar Guild to be not an end in itself, but a means to deepen your spiritual life.
Who we are and what we do. . . .
The Altar Guild has the privilege of preparing the altar for any service held in the church, and assisting the clergy whenever necessary. The members are also responsible for cleaning the altars, caring for the sacred vessels, and securing the necessary articles to be used at any service.
As you are called to serve our Lord, and if you possess qualities of tact, composure, tolerance and adaptability, you may find the Altar Guild to be a place where you can serve and grow spiritually. Membership in the Altar Guild is open to men and women of any age. If you are interested in serving on the Altar Guild, make your desire known to the rector or one of the co-chairs.

Eucharistic Ministers
Lay persons who administer the bread and wine at worship services. Eucharistic ministers are scheduled on a rotating basis and must be confirmed members of St. David’s, approved by the Rector and licensed by the Bishop of the Diocese. Attendance at a training session is required before beginning the ministry. An annual retreat is held for the group for further training and spiritual development.
Eucharistic Visitors
Lay persons who take the bread and wine to those unable to attend a worship service. This ministry allows the homebound members of St. David’s to experience the embrace of the community. Eucharistic Visitors are licensed by the Bishop to deliver the Eucharist on Sundays to people who are unable to attend a worship service. The only requirements for this ministry are the enjoyment of meeting and visiting people and some training provided here at St. David’s.
Ushers
The ushers greet and welcome the congregation and assist with their seating. They distribute the worship bulletins. Ushers arrive early to make sure the church is neat. During the service they collect the offerings, which along with the bread and wine are presented to the celebrant. They count and record the offerings, and record the service attendance in the church book. Ushers are available to assist the congregation with any situational problems which might arise. After each service, they tidy the pews for the next service. Ushers serve on a rotating basis.
Sunday Lectors
Lectors read the Old Testament and New Testament lessons at Sunday services. They are scheduled on a rotating basis. Interested parties need advanced reading skills, a strong voice and a public speaking presence. Attendance at a training session is required before beginning the ministry. An annual retreat is held for further training and spiritual development.
Sunday Intercessors
Intercessors lead The Prayers of the People at Sunday Eucharist services. They are a group of women and men who represent the worshipping community by leading the prayers. Interested persons need advanced reading skills, a strong voice, and a public speaking presence.
Acolytes
Acolytes participate in the procession and assist at the altar for weekly Sunday morning services. They also serve at special services such as weddings, funerals, and ordinations. The large majority of the acolytes are youth in grades 6-12. However, this ministry is not limited to youth! We welcome all people who have a desire to serve and worship in this capacity.
Daily Office Worship Leaders
Lay persons who lead Daily Morning Prayer and Daily Evening Prayer. St. David’s is among the few Episcopal parishes where, every weekday, we continue the centuries-old tradition of Daily Morning Prayer and Daily Evening Prayer. In the serene quiet of Grace Chapel, lay worship leaders and parishioners gather to mark the beginning and end of the day in special prayers for individuals of our parish community. If you are a confirmed member of St. David’s, willing to attend training sessions, and can commit to leading a service two or three times a month, we invite you to join our guild. For more information, contact .
Five O’Clock Service Hosts
Volunteers who serve once each month at the Celtic worship service in Bethell Hall. Hosts arrive early to help set-up and greet. They participate as lectors and eucharistic ministers during the service and then stay after the service to clean up.
Bethell Hall 9 A. M. Service Volunteers
We work with the clergy to manage the worship tasks and programs of the 9 a.m. Sunday Bethell Hall service. The volunteers meet as a group twice a year on a Saturday morning (once in the fall and once in the spring). For more information, contact .
Nursing Home Ministry
Volunteer once a month to assist clergy when they celebrate the Eucharist at nursing homes. Team members include, but are not limited to, piano players, song leaders, and Eucharistic ministers. For more information, contact for more information.
