2007 Annual Youth vs. Parents Kickball Game
Rally Day: The youth calendar starts with the school year, and our first event is Rally Day, which is the big kickoff for all our programming. In the morning you get to meet your Christian Formation class and teachers, find out what we have planned for the year, and see all your friends that you’ve missed over the summer break. In the evening we have a celebration for the start of EYC. After Rally Day, all the regular programming starts on Sundays and we start study hours on Wednesday.
Selling Christmas Wreaths: Every year during October and November, the youth sell beautiful evergreen Christmas wreaths to help them pay for ski trip.
Mamma Leone’s Italian Dinner: Usually in December, the youth host this Italian Dinner for the parish and friends to help raise money for ski trip. The youth sell tickets, work as waiters and waitresses, and auction off desserts. This is a really fun, festive event.
Rite-13: We celebrate the gift of manhood and womanhood of our 13 year olds in this rite of passage much like the bat or bar mitzvah (without all the memorization). It is a wonderful ceremony which is made even more meaningful when all the youth are there to support the candidates.
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner: On the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the youth make a delicious pancake dinner for the parish to raise money for youth outreach.
Ski Trip: Every Spring Break, the youth take a trip to Colorado to enjoy some skiing and snowboarding, fun, food, and fellowship. This is an exciting event that allows us all to bond and make lasting friendships.
Confirmation: Classes start in the spring (usually in March) to help prepare our youth to make the adult commitment of confirmation. We confirm youth who are in 10th grade or older, and classes are after school on Tuesdays.
Pecan Street: The Old Pecan Street Festival happens twice a year down on 6th Street, and it is always a BLAST. Everyone seems to have a good time preparing and selling brisket sandwiches AND we make tons of money doing it. The money we raise in the spring goes to youth mission trips, and the money we raise in the fall goes to the Warm Heart International Malawi Outreach Fund, to help our sister church in Malawi, Africa.
Youth Sunday: At the end of the school year we have Youth Sunday to celebrate the youth in our church. The graduating seniors deliver the homily at the 9 a.m. service in the Historic Sanctuary, and we have a party that evening to celebrate the end of school.
Happening & Y.E.S: Throughout the year, the diocese has retreat weekends for the youth. Happening is for 10th-12th graders and Y.E.S. is for 7th-9th graders. It is really fun weekend, and you should sign up soon before all the spots fill up. Several people from our church have been to Happening and it’s a blast, so put it on your calendars and try to make plans to go. I am even offering scholarships of half of the cost of the weekend retreat for those who sign up to go. Please let Andie know if you are interested. I’m sure you will have an incredible time.
Mission Trips: We take mission trips in the summer to help out our brothers and sisters in Christ who are not as fortunate. In the last few years, we have gone to Houston and New Orleans, and in the summer of 2008, we are planning to go to Galveston for the Jr. High Mission Trip and the Mississippi Gulf Coast for the Sr. High Trip. Contact Andie for details.
J2A Pilgrimage: The Journey to Adulthood (J2A) class plans and goes on a pilgrimage during the summer as the culmination of the class.
