Austin Episcopal Churches Unite for 'La Gran Posada'

Hundreds Gathered at St. David’s Episcopal Church to Celebrate and Support Beloved Hispanic Tradition

On Saturday, Dec. 20, 2025, local Episcopal churches joined together for a historic “La Gran Posada” celebration at St. David’s Episcopal Church. In a powerful show of unity, the event brought together hundreds of people from across the Austin faith community for a joyous religious celebration honoring Hispanic heritage and the spirit of welcome.

For many attendees, this was their first experience with a Posada. The community-wide event welcomed families of all ages and backgrounds for a traditional procession, live mariachi music, piñatas, and authentic Hispanic cuisine.

The Posada is a traditional Latin American religious observance commemorating Joseph and Mary’s search for refuge in Bethlehem. By reenacting this journey, the celebration highlights both the beauty of the Christmas story and the modern importance of welcoming the stranger.

"We are proud to have hosted such a vibrant display of faith and community," said Dianne Hardy-Garcia, director of Community Engagement and Advocacy at St. David’s. "Given the challenges facing Hispanic communities in Texas today, this gathering served as a vital reminder of our shared commitment to hospitality and solidarity."

The Austin churches participating in “La Gran Posada” included:

  • All Saints’ Episcopal Church
  • St. Alban’s Episcopal Church
  • Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd
  • St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church
  • St. David’s Episcopal Church
  • St. James’ Episcopal Church
  • St. John’s Episcopal Church
  • Jubilee Episcopal Church
  • St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church
  • St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church
  • St. Michael’s Episcopal Church

The liturgy was led by the Rev. Chuck Treadwell (St. David’s) and the Rev. Daniel Robayo (St. Mary Magdalene), with participation from the Rev. Lizzie McManus-Dail (Jubilee) and the Rev. Katie Leuba (St. Matthew’s).
