Our Cooling Center – God’s Love in Action

25Sep

This summer, witnessing the many ways our community – at Trinity Center and St. David’s – has come together to help our unhoused neighbors for the Cooling Center is to truly witness God’s love in action.

Recently, St. David’s and Trinity Center had the privilege of hosting Austin Mayor Kirk Watson as he toured our Trinity Center Inclement Weather Cooling Center Pilot Project. He was so moved and impressed by the work being done that he asked, “How can I help you do more?”

As you may know, Trinity Center and St. David’s worked in partnership with the City of Austin to create this Cooling Center Pilot Project. After years of watching our unhoused neighbors suffer during scorching Austin summers, this project was an opportunity to provide significant and life-saving relief from the rising heat levels faced by our most vulnerable in downtown Austin.

With the support of the City of Austin, Trinity Center’s dedicated staff and board, St. David’s parishioners, and many incredible volunteers, we opened the doors of the Cooling Center on July 1, 2024. Working together this summer, the Trinity Center Cooling Center was able to:

  • provide 6,000+ service visits,
  • distribute nearly 1,300 sets of clothing,
  • offer 900+ showers,
  • share 3,000+ meals with those in need, and most importantly,
  • provide our neighbors with a safe, loving, and welcoming place to cool off during times excessive heat and humidity.

As we enter the final week of the Trinity Center Cooling Center Pilot Project, please know that your stewardship contributions, volunteer hours, special donations, and prayers have made a difference in profound ways to those who need it most. Thank you!
