Twice in the Gospel of Luke the author makes reference to “certain women,” named and unnamed, who funded the ministry of Jesus or who came to tend what they believed to be his dead body on Easter. As we anticipate the coming of Jesus at Christmas, let us take time to consider the stories of the women direct and indirect in his family line and what they would invite us to notice, wonder, and ponder as we draw close to the Incarnation. Using the lens of Scripture, history, womanist approaches, and Jewish interpretive traditions, we will come to see these woman anew and find in them witness, conviction, and hope.
