On May 12, 80 people gathered at St. David’s during the formation hour to consider how to respond faithfully and well to the ongoing crises in Palestine and Israel today. The Rev. Canon Leyla King provided a way into the conversation about the current realities through the lens of her family’s experiences as Palestinian Christians. Her stories helped us learn about the underlying roots of the conflict from a historical and political perspective and equipped us to think and speak more compassionately about current events and future hopes in the Holy Land.
Canon King challenged those of us in the Episcopal Church to speak out on the history of colonialism in Palestine and the system of apartheid that exists in the region today. She also encouraged us to study the Kairos Palestine document, which was released in 2009. It was authored by an ecumenical group of religious leaders in the Middle East and intended as the word of Christian Palestinians to the world about what is happening in Palestine. The 81st General Convention of The Episcopal Church, to be held in June 2024, is poised to consider 12 resolutions related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Holy Conversations is an offering of the Adult Formation program at St. David’s on the second Sunday of each month. It focuses on a current event or issue from the perspective of our faith as Episcopalians. The next Holy Conversation, on June 9, will be an in-person viewing and discussion of the Oscar-nominated short film The ABCs of Book Banning.
