On Sunday, Oct. 22, we will have two services in our Historic Church.
- 8 a.m., Holy Eucharist, Rite I
- 10:30 a.m., All-parish worship (followed by a celebration in Sumners Hall)
At 10:30 a.m. Bishop Andy Doyle will celebrate and preach at our Feast of St. David mass, confirm the newest members of the church, and help us commemorate our 175th anniversary.
The feast of our patron saint, David, a monk and Bishop of Menevia (Wales) in the sixth century, is appointed for March 1, which very often falls in Lent. A patronal feast can be moved (‘transferred’) to a Sunday – but not during Advent, Lent, or Eastertide. Therefore we have transferred its celebration to this Sunday, using the Collect (prayer) and Lessons (Scripture readings) appointed for his feast. On this day we give thanks for our patron’s leadership and example, and for the fellowship of David and all the Saints. The hymn ‘Te Deum laudamus’ (‘We praise thee, O God’), which dates from the fourth century, is traditionally sung not only at Morning Prayer but also on occasions of great thanksgiving. In celebration of St David’s 175th anniversary, current and former members of the St David’s Choir will premiere a new setting of this text by Eric Mellenbruch, organist and interim choirmaster. One of the most striking features of the original Latin text is the fact that two-thirds of its lines begin with a form of the word ‘you’, clearly placing emphasis on God as the object of earthly and heavenly praise, and on Jesus Christ as the divine King, Son, and Savior. Our new setting of the traditional English version translates this grammatical-rhetorical feature into a musical one, placing the pronouns ‘thee’ and ‘thou’ on strong musical beats throughout. The work also quotes the well-known opening notes of the traditional Te Deum chant melody several times.
We hope you will join us on this special day.
