On Welcome Home Sunday, Aug. 18, during our 10:30 a.m. all-parish worship service, St. David's Grants Committee for Community Outreach (GCCO) will recognize three local non-profits that received $10,000 grants.
Grant funding came from sales at Next-to-New, St. David's consignment and resale shop on 5435 Burnet Road. In 2024, the committee received a record 60 local non-profits' applications for funding.

Welcome Table
The Welcome Table requested a grant to help fund their Freedom School program, which provides educational support for young scholars ages 6-11, most of whom are children of color from low-income neighborhoods. Freedom School encompasses a 6-week summer program as well as monthly engagement with students and their families throughout the academic year. Funds from our grant will go toward personnel costs, staA development, field trips, and program supplies such as books, art supplies, meals, and snacks.
Ladies Let’s Talk
Ladies Let’s Talk (LLT) asked for our help in funding their free Basic English for Afghan Women classes. The program addresses the unique educational needs of recently arrived Afghan refugee women, focusing on preliterate learners from regions of Afghanistan with limited educational access. This non-profit currently supports 24 refugee women and offers childcare for their children under the age of 5. The program aims to prepare the women to enroll in traditional ESL classes by providing literacy and language skills and helping to navigate the challenges of everyday life. It also brings friendship and sisterhood to a population of women who are often socially isolated in our community. The grant money will be used for teacher salaries, childcare workers, and professional development opportunities for staff and volunteers.
Magdalene House
Magdalene House is a survivor-led community for adult women who have survived sex trafficking. Centered in love, Magdalene House provides safe and supportive housing, access to healthcare services, counseling, and professional development. Money from a St. David’s grant will go towards their Compassionate Care Compensation Initiative, which will pay the salary of a dedicated social worker to counsel women, particularly in the second house which MH has purchased across the street from the original house to expand their services (they have a very long waiting list). The social worker will support the women on-site as well as coordinate appointments with outside support services and the necessary transportation to them.
