Invitation from St. David's Racial Justice Committee to Fall formation at St. Matts

On behalf of our friends at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, located at 8134 Mesa Dr, Austin, TX 78759, St. David's Racial Justice Committee would like to extend an invitation to fellow St. David’s parishioners and friends to engage in the following formational activities over the next few months.

Traces of the Trade

Sunday, Aug. 26
6-9 p.m. 
For those who missed screenings at St. David's in 2020 and 2021, St. Matthew's will be screening of the documentary Traces of Trade: A Story from the Deep North, which recounts one New England family’s involvement in the slave trade in the 18th and early 19th centuries, against the backdrop of Northern businesses, communities, and residents who condoned and benefited from slave trading. The event will include dinner and a facilitated discussion of the film by Dain and Constance Perry, members of the New England family, joining the conversation in person.

One Human Race Workshop

Saturday, Sept. 14
9 a.m.-5 p.m.
One Human Race workshop at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. This day-long workshop is facilitated by the Myra McDaniel Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians.

Sacred Ground

Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024-Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025
St. Matthews will host the Sacred Ground, a film- and readings-based series on race, grounded in faith, with small groups walking through America’s history of race and racism. The 11-part series will be offered in two-hour sessions via Zoom every two weeks between Sept. 19, 2024, and Feb. 20, 2025, with breaks for holidays. Information about registration is forthcoming.


Civil Rights Pilgrimage

March 26-30, 2025—Arranged by Faith Journeys, this trip will explore sites in Alabama including Birmingham, Montgomery, and Selma. Participants will fly to and from Birmingham and will travel to sites in Alabama via motor coach. (Joy Philpott went on a similar tour last year; see her if you’d like to hear about the experience)

April 2-10, 2025—Participants on this trip, led by Pastor Ray Jordan, will travel by motor coach to the following stops:

  • Tulsa, Oklahoma
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Jackson and Philadelphia, Mississippi
  • Montogomery, Selma, and Birmingham, Alabama
