Meet the Ministry Leaders: Laundry Love
Something as simple as clean clothes creates an opportunity to connect with strangers, build friendships, and share God’s love...
October’s Ministry of the Month is Laundry Love which began as a Bridge Builders ministry at St David's in 2014 when Amy Moehnke and Marissa Gilmore announced, "St. David's will begin showing its love at the laundromat." Derek Pang heard that invitation and shares his experiences.
How long have you been involved with Laundry Love?
I started helping with Laundry Love shortly after it began, took some time off when my kiddos were more than a handful, and returned to the SpinZone laundromat after the pandemic.
What got you interested in Laundry Love?
I loved the idea of building-up God's kingdom one load of laundry at a time. Something as simple as clean clothes creates an opportunity to connect with strangers, build friendships, and share God’s love in a way that honors the dignity of every person.
What is one memory of this ministry that is meaningful for you and why?
The first time I brought my middle schooler to Laundry Love was an eye-opening experience for him. It helped him to see how many people of all ages accepted our help with their laundry needs.
In what ways have you seen God working to help the ministry grow or change over the years?
We’ve been fortunate to have students from UT and St Edward’s take time out of their busy schedules to volunteer for this ministry.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about this ministry?
We couldn’t hold Laundry Love each month without the kind support of the SpinZone Laundry owner and staff.
How can St. David’s parishioners support the ministry?
Laundry Love is always looking for volunteers who can help hand out detergent and snacks once a month! We also appreciate one-time or recurring donations through the St David's website.
We are grateful for the gifts of St. David's, the Laundry Love ministry, and its dedicated volunteers.

For more than a decade, Laundry Love has served as a vital ministry of St. David’s Episcopal Church, restoring dignity and brightening the lives of Central Texans through increasing access to clean clothes.
On the last Thursday of every month, St. David's staff and volunteers gather at SpinZone Laundry (2424 S. Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78704) to provide laundry cards, detergent, and simple, warm meals to neighbors in need. Annually, this generous ministry helps with over 5,000 loads of laundry and serves 1,600 meals to individuals and families.
