Stories of Discernment: Christian Rodriguez

28Jun
Discernment for me looks like ensuring what I am doing truly aligns with my values as a Christian and “helper,” both of which fuel my continued presence and leadership in Trinity Center.

how did you discern god's will?

My involvement with Trinity Center began in 2014 when I chose the agency to complete my field placement for UT’s School of Social Work. I came across Trinity Center because I wanted to get experience within a faith-based organization. I’ve always felt the call to live out my faith and serve others and the field of social work felt like the best avenue I could take to do so. I had an amazing and impactful experience, and when it was time for me to graduate, I left, wishing I could work here full-time. Almost 4 years passed, and I made the decision to come back and volunteer on a weekly basis. It was like riding a bike—I remembered a lot of the processes and right away looked for ways to contribute all I could. I would be presented with a coming job opportunity, apply, and get the job. A global pandemic and six years later, here I am, typing this out as the agency’s Executive Director. Being here has always been about serving others. In my old role running the agency’s operations had me on the frontlines meeting the needs of the neighbors we love. In my new role, the serving of others comes more in the serving of my team, who are doing amazing work every day. The call to serve is always there and it is why I continue to be here. God wired me this way and in seasons where I may not be “serving others,” I feel like in subtle and sometimes convicting ways, the Lord makes it known when I’m straying away from His purpose for me. Discernment for me looks like ensuring what I am doing truly aligns with my values as a Christian and “helper,” both of which fuel my continued presence and leadership in Trinity Center.

was there a moment or sign when you knew the voice of god was present?

I don’t believe there was a moment or sign in the hiring process for me. To be honest I was hesitant and unsure if I really wanted to pursue this role, but my wife was a big encouragement and supporter in the whole process. I’m a big believer in leaving things in God’s hands and that is what I did.

what is your continuing discernment practice?

Aside from my own personal time in prayer and reflection, my church community, as well as my closest friends, play a big part in my life. Whether personal struggles, triumphs, challenges, etc., I value the listening ears and wise counsel of those closest to me. I can’t say I’ve ever had a big moment where I heard the voice of God—most of the time, I hear His voice through His people. And it’s not always everything I want to hear, but more often than not, what I need to hear.

STORIES OF DISCERNMENT
These Stories of Discernment came out of our 2024 year-long focus on discernment as a parish. Throughout the summer, we will share these stories to inspire our community to continue to explore ways to listen to God’s call in our lives as individuals and as a parish.
