It was so lovely to sit down recently with several young adults in their 20s to discuss how we can better meet their needs at St. David’s.
On Sept. 28, we got to know one another over a delicious sandwich lunch prepared by the Hospitality team. This meeting came together because I had observed so many folks attending our Austin-Area EpiscoPals group over the summer, but then not truly connecting with the group and seemingly bouncing off of it. I wondered if perhaps the core group had just gotten a little too old for our newbies.
When we started this ministry in late 2019, we were all in our mid to late 20s; time stops for no one, and now we’re all mostly in our early to mid 30s. The Episcopal Church frequently lumps these age ranges together, but they’re usually vastly different seasons of life!
After meeting with the 20s folks, I learned my suspicions were correct. They loved the program format, and the people were lovely, but they felt a little lost in a crowd of people who “seemed to know what a mortgage is.” In response to this, we’ve made a pact! For our folks in their 20s, we’ve made an Instagram group chat, so that they can chat together before deciding to attend a Pals event. They hope to create a “20s Vanguard” (a word we chose and then had to google together to describe what we were: The person(s) at the forefront of any group or movement.) so that they don’t show up alone to a Pals event, but can go when there’s enough critical mass for their own community to join.
Send me your Instagram handle ( ) if you’d like to join a Pals event soon but want to make sure there’s other folks your age there!
