In late August, the St. David’s Grant Committee for Community Outreach (GCCO) awarded four $10,000 grants to local non-profits. St. David’s Grants Committee awards these grants with funding provided by sales at our Next-to-New shop. Over the next four weeks, we would like to introduce each of these recipients to you.
CASA MARIANELLA
Casa Marianella has been housing people who have come to the US seeking safety for 37 years. Currently, Casa houses 160 people a night from dozens of countries. Everyone receives three months of shelter, access to medical care, access to legal services, and then help finding an apartment.
Casa Marianella started in 1986 as a home for men, women, and children. As Casa has grown, a nearby branch site was created in 2003 for women with children (many of whom are escaping domestic or cultural violence) and named Posada Esperanza. Casa Marianella currently consists of three neighboring houses for men and women without children, while Casa’s Posada Esperanza branch has expanded to four neighboring houses. Our agency as a whole shelters an average of 325 individuals annually, as well as providing assistance and services to the community.
Casa Marianella offers English as a second language classes for residents and the community. Classes are held in the evening, Monday through Thursday. Casa offers three levels of classes as well as one-on-one tutoring for beginners.
Austin is a generous community, and Casa Marianella is another excellent example. The grants given by St. David’s are a significant donation that can make a big impact in moving charities forward with their mission.
