Meet the Ministry: Children's Choir
As a culture we need choir, faith, community, and music more than ever.

This week, we’re getting to know a little more about our children’s choir ministry. Children’s Choir Director Jessy Eubanks has been teaching music since 2019 and directing the Children’s Choir since 2024.
She has served as our accompanist for the Children's Choir musical, a rehearsal pianist, and music director for Summer Performing Arts at St. David's. Jessy is also a pianist, vocalist, and music educator with a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Texas at Austin.

What is it about children’s choir ministry that calls to you?
Music has made such a positive and meaningful impact in my life, and I want everybody to be able to experience that same joy and healing. Plus, I love working with kids!
I think it’s also healthy for children to have a screen-free activity where there are no tests or competitions. Choir also teaches valuable skills like teamwork, leadership, setting and achieving goals, problem solving (I like to ask the kids, “how would a smart practicer approach this?”) and a deeper understanding of how we can fully worship God.
What’s one thing that surprised you about children’s choir at St. David’s?
How much I learn from the kids! They’re so creative and kind, and always have a new interesting story or anecdote to share. I never know what amazing (and often hilarious) things they are going to bring to us. It’s truly a joy.
How do you see God working in and through our children’s choir?
My first time coming to St. David’s was in early 2022, so I’ve gotten to see some of the kids grow up a little. God is helping these children become wonderful humans who are discovering what they like, expressing themselves through music and the arts, and helping others.
Is it as simple as asking kids if they like to sing?
I’d say it’s as simple as reminding kids that they get to sing!
But to actually answer the question - yes. Singing is so important for mental, physical, and spiritual health, and as a culture we need choir, faith, community, and music more than ever. Singing in church choir sets up a spiritual and musical foundation that children carry into adulthood, and the social and spiritual benefits are truly transformative. Everyone is welcome exactly as they are. Singing is for everyone, at any age. Period.
What would you say to parents or caregivers of children about the commitment to be in choir?
It’s not a huge time commitment, and there are no grades! We rehearse for an hour on Wednesday evenings, and sing in church roughly once every six weeks. We just ask that choristers practice at least three times a week. This can look like 5-10 minutes singing along with a recording, reviewing the lyrics with someone at home, or having the music play in the car.

What does your child enjoy about children’s choir at St. David’s?
Edda enjoys the community that children's choir fosters.
What do you enjoy about children’s choir at St. David’s?
I enjoy the routine of Wednesday dinners at Café Divine and a kid-free hour with friends or a good book while she is in choir practice.
In what ways have you seen God’s work through children’s choir?
I see God at work in the delight the children take in worshiping through music.
I love to see the joy that singing together brings to the children, and I believe that their joy blesses the whole congregation. Inviting children to serve the church in this meaningful way enriches our life together as the body of Christ.
