Stories of Discernment: Ray Trono

20Sep
I believe that one premise of God's will that I follow is that we are called to help and to serve those of us in need.

How did you feel called to action? How did you discern God’s will?

I think I have been discerning God's Will frequently over the years. During this lifelong period of discernment, (and it is continual), I believe that one premise of God's will that I follow is that we are called to help and to serve those of us in need. From that premise, I having been looking for opportunities where I can make that difference, and it usually is done with others that I surround myself with. A few struggles I have overcome along the way as well as Falling Upward by Richard Rohr made a big impact in how I discerns God's will.

was there a moment or sign when you knew the voice of god was present?

I hope that the voice that I hear is God's, because it happens pretty often. It usually takes place when I am working with others, not when we are sitting around talking, but when our hands are in the middle of doing something. This is when I see in real time what is being accomplished and knowing that it's not just me but it's everyone participating. That's when I hear the voice saying that this is good.

what is your continuing discernment practice?

In the midst of my typical state of controlled chaos, I have to separate the doing from the discerning. This is not easy for me to do, so for me discernment has to be a deliberate practice, and it usually happens when I realize, or I am made to realize that I have to slow down, think, rethink, listen and plan and then again think before I act. Usually in the early morning with coffee.

STORIES OF DISCERNMENT
These Stories of Discernment came out of our 2024 year-long focus on discernment as a parish. We will periodically share these stories to inspire our community to continue to explore ways to listen to God’s call in our lives as individuals and as a parish.
