Youth Pool Party

12Aug

Youth Ministry kicked off the back-to-school season with an end-of-summer pool party at Fr. Chuck’s house. We ended up with 17 incredible teens in attendance, several of whom are new to the ministry. Our theme for the party was “Pool Olympics” and Fr. Chuck even provided an Olympic torch!

We split our group into three teams, each team came up with one game the entire group would play, resulting in three games to compete in to win the coveted Olympic Award. Assistant director of youth ministry, Sara Cannon, led Team Old Testament, a team primarily consisting of middle school girls. Fr. Chuck Treadwell led Team Apocrypha, a team made of middle and high school boys. Youth and Young Adult Ministries Director Kelsey Cooper led Team New Testament, a team of almost only upperclass students. All teams ate a meal of Jimmy Johns together and plotted what game they would suggest before the Pool Olympics could begin!

Team Apocrypha led us in a game of Javelin Toss using pool noodles. They absolutely crushed the competition and won gold in that, with team NT earning silver, and team OT earning bronze. After that was an intense battle in Mermaid Race, in which each team swims a relay race with their feet together like a mermaid tail. We learned that’s a lot harder than it looks! Team NT took Gold by a mile, thanks to their two competitive swimmers!! Team Apocrypha earned silver with team OT just behind them in bronze.

Finally, we played an elimination round of Pterodactyl, suggested by Team OT. You have to cover your teeth with your lips, say “pterodactyl” and then make a pterodactyl screech without making your opponent laugh. There were a lot of theater kids in attendance, who were very professional about screeching and never laughing so it did take a while, but eventually we were down to two players, one from Team NT and another from Team Apocrypha. They proved too good to beat, and the winner was determined via Rock-Paper-Scissors. Team NT took home the Gold on that one, making them the Champions of Pool Olympics!

Their award when next they attend EYC, which resumes August 21, will be to share a bag of Sour Patch Kids.

Congrats to all our players!
